Why convert PNG to JPG?
PNG files use lossless compression, which makes them large — especially for photographs. A typical photo saved as PNG can be 5–10x larger than the same photo saved as JPG. Converting PNG to JPG is the fastest way to dramatically reduce file size for sharing by email, uploading to social media, or sending via messaging apps. JPG is also universally supported across every device, app, and platform, making it the most compatible format for sharing photos.
What happens to transparent areas?
JPG does not support transparency. When you convert a PNG with a transparent background to JPG, the transparent areas are filled with white. This is the standard behaviour and is generally fine for photos. However if your PNG is a logo, icon, or graphic with a transparent background that you need to preserve, convert to WebP instead — WebP supports transparency and achieves similar file size reductions to JPG. FreeImageConverter handles this automatically, filling transparent areas with white when converting to JPG.
